Studentenrutsche – (below) Steinkreuz (short route 4)

From the Studentenrutsche, a narrow path along the cliff side quickly takes you to the Kupferplatte, the most westerly edge of the Kernberge hills. Landmarks on the horizon are identified on engraved information panels, from Bismarckturm tower and the 1806 battlefields on the west bank of the Saale river to Jenzig hill on the east bank. The view across Jena in the valley below is quite spectacular. From here you can descend into the city centre via the Teufelslöcher caves.

The SaaleHorizontale trail continues into a beech forest. The altitude is fairly constant, remaining at nearly 300 metres above sea level, but the trail no longer runs quite as steeply along the cliff side. It turns east into the Ziegenhain valley, only rising to the level of the Kernberge hills plateau just before Steinkreuz. About 300 metres from Steinkreuz the SaaleHorizontale crosses the road from Ziegenhain to Steinkreuz, where several walking trails meet.
